NeuroApps Suite - Preview

As a result of the experience we gained during the development of the NeuroKey and NeuroVault pre-release apps, combined with the excellent feedback from our users, we have escalated development of what was going to be our 2nd generation of applications.

Rather than re-write all the applications in six to twelve months, we have decided to start implementing many of the concepts now. Central to this, is a modular design. The following (basic) sketch illustrates this structure.

While there are numerous advantages not illustrated above (we don't want to give all our secrets away), this modular approach will enable us to rapidly produce additional mini-apps by re-using the features of the various modules. Certainly, one important lesson that we have already learned is that there are many different needs, and it is vital that we are able to produce solutions by combining various 'building blocks', minimising custom code wherever possible. All Neuro modules will happily interact with each other.

NeuroDetect is now moderately functional and a few users have been given a preview copy to evaluate. We mainly need to develop the functionality to support generation and maintenance of user neuro-profiles.

Assuming the feedback from our early testers is favourable, we will link in the user-interface of the existing NeuroVault and NeuroKey applications as soon as possible.

Key Features of the NeuroDetect Module.

Typically NeuroDetect will be minimised and operate in the background, providing data to the primary application (such as NeuroKey). This 'background' role might imply that NeuroDetect is a very simple module, but in fact, it will probably have a lot more features than most of the main applications it will support.

The reason NeuroDetect is fully featured is because it is your interface to the physical hardware. Its features have been designed to assist you in setting-up, tuning and trouble-shooting the headset or other signal source. It allows you to define event conditions which will trigger functionality in other applications. At any time you can monitor every single aspect of the Emotiv Epoc headset, including hardware and driver status. Every detection of the headset is fully supported.

Detection to Event Matrix

This matrix lets you configure a set of detections to trigger certain actions or functionality in the main application, or any other Neuro application which is listening.

The event names in the matrix are determined by the primary application. For example, the events named in this image is what would appear if NeuroKey is the primary application. If NeuroVault were the main application, the events would  trigger the recording to start and stop, and insert data markers etc.

Saved Configurations / Profiles:

You can define an unlimited number of named configurations for different users and applications. Each configuration can include an Emotiv user training profile, allowing profiles to be re-used without having to retrain each time.

Highlighted:

A) Clear LED Signal State Indicators glow brighter in proportion to the signal level until the trigger threshold is reached when the LED turns red.

B) Individual thresholds can be defined for each detection. This allows you to tune the sensitivity to each individual.

C) A minimum 'hold' duration can be specified for each detection. This permits you to tune reflex actions such as blinks, to eliminate false triggers by specifying a longer hold duration. 

 

Comprehensive Display

NeuroDetect displays all relevant data in one easy to read screen. Additional floating panels can be popped-up and dragged to a separate monitor if preferred.

The Detection/Event matrix (shown above) is replaced by the affectiv data gauges and history plot (following image) as soon as you connect to the headset. All of or graphical plot data has a 10x scaling factor. For example, the affectiv data plots belo cover a 30 second span, but this can be increased to 5 minutes (300 seconds) by adjusting the slider at the bottom.
